This past weekend on Friday October 18th & Saturday October 19th the Lake Region State College Royals Volleyball team hosted the Sleep Inn Slamfest.
Friday, LRSC kicked off the tournament by matching up with Northland Community & Technical College. The first two sets were very close with th Royals taking set one 25-22 & NCTC taking set two 25-23 to tie it up at 1-1. Then Lake Region flipped the switch and dominated the next two sets winning 25-17 and 25-16 to win the match 3-1.
Next up that afternoon was Providence College out of Canada. The Royals had to battle to take set one, winning 30-28. Playing some of their best volleyball of the weekend, LRSC would dominate set two wining 25-19. In the third set, Providence would do everything they could to win the set but were blocked every step of the way. Lake Region would prevail 25-22 in the third set winning the match 3-0.
On Saturday morning, once again the Royals would kick off the tournament taking on Southeast CC. A slow start would hurt LRSC as they would fall 25-18 in set one. After that they would wake up and it was all Lake Region after that. Set two would be had by the final of 25-22, set three would be won by the final score of 25-11 and they would earn a fourth set win 25-23. Cruising to a 3-1 match victory.
Lake Region would be riding a five game win streak having defeated two conference opponents prior to the tournament heading into their final game. It would not end the way they would hoped. Assiniboine had an answer for every move the Royals would make. They would defeat the home team 3-1 and win the match.
After the weekend Head Coach Brigitte Greywater had this to say about her squad, "Our team had an ahha moment this week. We can really feel a difference in our purpose as a team. The girls continued to find a way to win games this weekend and had the mindset continually for victory. I am proud of those young ladies."
The Royals now sit at 12-18 (4-6). They face a gauntlet in the final week of the season playing at Mayville State JV on Monday Oct 21st, hosting Bismarck State on Wednesday the 23rd, at Trinity Bible on Friday the 25th and finish out the season Sunday the 27th in Wahpeton against North Dakota State College of Science.
